Structure of the Programme

IMFSE is a 2-year full-time master's program consisting of 120 ECTS credits in total. This breaks down into 4 semesters of 30 ECTS credits each. The teaching language of the programme is English.

The mobility structure, with possible change in study location after each semester, gives students the opportunity to gain from the strengths and expertise of different universities in the field of Fire Safety Engineering.

  • Semester 1 at Ghent University or The University of Edinburgh covers basic topics in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • All students gather at Lund University to spend semester 2 there, with emphasis on enclosure fire dynamics, risk analysis and human behavior in fire.
  • More in-depth courses are given during semester 3 at Ghent University or Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
  • Semester 4 is dedicated to the Master’s thesis, and students can be hosted by 1 of the Full Partner Institutes or 1 of the Associated Partner Institutes. Collaborations with 1 of the IMFSE Contributors is also a possibility.

Due to the structure of the IMFSE programme, the students automatically study at at least two different countries for at least one full semester each.

The global structure of the Erasmus Mundus Master Course (EMMC) is such that the students benefit from the expertise of each of the FPUs. Moreover, the mobility is arranged in such a manner that networking among the students is stimulated, as all students spend semester 2 together at LU.

The choice between UGent and UoE in semester 1, and between UGent and UPC in semester 3, allows students to visit different FPUs during their study programme.
